Dental Veener

Dental problems such as tooth decay, stains, chipped or broken teeth, etc. are some of the reasons people choose porcelain veneers. They are thin shells that are tailor-made as per the person’s needs and are a durable and effective way to achieve a perfect smile. The process of fixing veneers is almost hassle-free. There is no need for extensive tooth shaping and the gum tissues adapt to the material very well. They are natural in appearance, have a brilliant white surface, and have more resistance to stain as compared to teeth.

A very common question asked about them is – ‘Are veneers permanent?’ Porcelain veneers can last for as long as 10 to 20 years if cared for properly. After that, they need to be replaced.

Tips on how to care for veneers

  1. Maintain a Good Oral Hygiene Routine

Regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing are all important for maintaining a healthy mouth as well as increasing the durability of veneers. Use non-abrasive toothpaste and a toothbrush with soft bristles. Follow it with flossing and finish up by rinsing with an antiseptic and alcohol-free mouthwash.

  2. Do Not Grind Your Teeth

Most people have the habit of grinding or clenching their teeth, especially while sleeping. It is known as bruxism. If left untreated, it can result in cracked veneers in severe cases. Besides, the solution for this can be as simple as wearing a nighttime mouthguard.

  3. Use Mouth Guard While Playing Contact Sports

If you are actively involved in contact sports, it is advisable to use mouth guards. This is because the impact on the face can easily cause the veneers to chip or crack.

  4. Eat Mindfully

Food and beverages such as coffee, wine, soy sauce, and berries have staining properties that can stain the veneers over a long period of time. Avoid or limit their consumption. Whenever you consume such foods and beverages make it a point to rinse your mouth immediately. Refrain from eating hard candies or ice as this may chip or crack the porcelain veneers if done repeatedly. Limit your consumption of acidic foods and drinks such as lemon and soda. They can stain and wear down the anti-staining resin of the veneers if consumed excessively for a long period of time.

  5. Quit Smoking

Continuous smoking can result in discoloration of the composite material used for bonding the veneers to the teeth. Sticky tar and other compounds in cigarettes and their smoke can cling to the surface of the teeth, lending a discolored appearance to them as well as the veneers in the long run.

  6. Do Not Use Your Teeth as a Tool

Never use your teeth to loosen a knot or as a bottle opener. This will not only harm your teeth but will also chip the veneers. Also, never bite on non-food hard things such as pens.
